NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Your child can explore courses and careers in-depth, at their own pace, anytime, anywhere and on any device. The tool includes 4,000 careers and 1,500 course options, all in one place.

How does it work?

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Dear Parents

This Term, our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents' and carers' perspectives on their child's experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, ipads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 21 August and 13 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

Uniform Donations Needed

A massive congratulations to all those involved in the Musical production of the Addams Family! A year of hard work paid off with a brilliant and entertaining show. So much positive feedback with anyone who attended giving raving reviews.

Special recognition to Mrs. Natalie Creighton who directed the show along with Mr Matthew Frazer and Mrs Nicky Engert as musical directors; Mr Matthew Parnell on lights and sound; the TAS staff who helped make the large props; the team of students and staff who created the costumes and smaller props and manned the door, backstage and canteen; the community members who assisted in the orchestra, with choreography and vocal coaching and the wonderful cast who worked tirelessly to play their part.

A massive undertaking and an incredible learning experience that concluded with 3 brilliant evening performances.

Expression of Interest - Camp Oxley Supervisor

Camp Oxley operates during the Tamworth Country Music Festival and is a significant fundraiser for the school, operated and organised by the Oxley High School P&C. It is anticipated that there will be approximately 70 caravan sites on school grounds during the festival.

The P&C are seeking expressions of interest from members of the OHS community for the role of Supervisor during the 2017 Festival.

The responsibilities of the position include all aspects of organisation and coordination of amenities, sites and caravans prior to, during and post festival.

Rate of pay is commission based.

Duke of Edinburgh - A Student’s Experience

The recent Duke of Edinburgh excursion to the Blue Mountains in Term Four was a huge success. The group of about 18 students started their adventure on Friday the 10^thof October with a massive 7 hour bus trip. The first night was spent at a free camp site in the Megalong Valley.

The walk covered approximately 24kms of bush, packed with spectacular scenery that was covered over two fantastic days. The first day was filled with lots of steep downhill trekking which, when carrying a 20kg pack on your back, was pretty hard going. The initial leg of the walk was called ‘The Grand Canyon' and was a picturesque gorge with lots of greenery, moss and little waterfalls. Most of the walk followed a river with crystal clear water. The scenery frequently changed between cool, damp rainforest and scrubby bush as we walked up and down hills and along the valley floor.

The hike out of the gorge was extremely difficult. The path to get out of the valley and reach the lookout at the top zigzagged up a cliff face that rose straight up 600m. The climb was hard and sweaty work, with some of the steps above knee height and going straight up but the view at the top was absolutely breathtaking with the iconic sheer rock bluffs of the Blue Mountains and the hazy blue forests.

This excursion was a part of the Duke of Edinburgh Program which has run very successfully at Oxley. The award itself is a program comprising of voluntary activities, skill development and physical recreation designed to take students through the potentially difficult period between adolescence and adulthood. To complete one level of the award, the participants must commit to completing one hour of regular activity per week in each section of the award, which may take 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on the award level the student is on.

The recent Blue Mountains Trek was part of the ‘Adventurous Journey' component of the award undertaken by the current group of students pursuing the Duke of Edinburgh under the guidance of Mr Paul Davis (Head Teacher PDHPE).

The hike itself was made possible for the students with the support of Mr Davis, Mr Mair and Mrs Sarah Dadd (who was a parent supervisor).

Oxley Junior Debating Team In Action

On Wednesday 15 October, Oxley's junior debating team was given a special opportunity to debate against the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

The Junior Chamber of Commerce is a group of 19-35 year olds that are involved in business around Tamworth.

The topic was "Online Versus In-Store Retail", and was originally going to only involve members of Junior Chamber of Commerce before a change of plans caused Oxley to be pulled in as the affirmative team.

Oxley's speakers consisted of Alexandra Haywood as first speaker, Geordie Brown as second speaker and Kirsten Thomas as third speaker. The team did an exceptional job on the night with the debate going to Oxley, with a special mention going to Geordie Brown as second speaker.

School Survey For Parents & Students

Parents/Caregivers and students have an opportunity to participate in helping the Senior Leadership Team shape the future of Oxley High School. We are requesting your assistance to complete an online survey to evaluate aspects of this school.

Ashleigh Receives NSW Training Award

Ashleigh Hooper, a Year 12 student at Oxley High, was awarded Highly Commended in the Trainee of the Year category at the regional NSW Training Awards, as well as runner-up in the Indigenous Trainee of the Year category. She has been undertaking a New England Health school-based traineeship in Nursing for the past year. This has given her an opportunity to understand nursing from a hands-on perspective. Ashleigh has applied to UNE to study a Bachelor of Nursing and is currently applying for scholarships.

Oxley Athletes Perform Brilliantly At CHS Athletics Carnival

Oxley High School athletes achieved outstanding results at the Combined High Schools Athletics in Sydney recently.

- Jessica Aldridge won gold in the 15yrs girls javelin (35.95m) to follow-up her record breaking throw of 14.16m the day before in the shot put.

- John Moore won gold in the 16yrs 110m hurdles.

- Lia Mills won silver in the 16yrs girls 200m and bronze in the 16 yrs girls 400m.

- The 13yrs girls 4 x 100m relay team, consisting of Jayme-Lee Averillo, Caitlin Barber, Olivia Tarlinton & Kate Stacey, achieved silver with a time of 53.92.

- Claire Brown was 3rd in the 14 years girls javelin and received a bronze medal.

Oxley Medal Tally - 3 gold, 2 silver, 2 bronze.

Oxley High School finished 26th in the point score out of 293 NSW secondary schools and an incredible 13th in the girls' point score! Oxley was the best performing school in the North West, and narrowly edged out Macksville High, to be the best performing country school with 61 points.

Considering the minimal support available for athletics in our area, I'm sure you will agree that this is an outstanding achievement!

Oxley High Chess Team Competes In Knockout

The Oxley Chess Team recently travelled to Armidale to compete in Round 5 of the NSW Country Secondary Schools Chess Teams Knockout Competition. Although TAS were victors on the day, winning three of the four games, our Year 7 first-timers Zac Burn and Joe Ross-Ward enjoyed the opportunity to represent their school, along with other team members Cameron Johnston, and Jonathon Stacey who was our successful player.

Six Oxley Girls Selected For State Dance Festival

This year, Oxley has six girls who have been selected as part of the Regional Dance Ensemble to perform in the State Dance Festival in Sydney starting on Monday the 15th of September. Abbey Condon, Tayah Thornberry, Shelby Botfield-Mohr, Shannon Vanderstelt and Tammy Robinson will travel to Sydney and perform in a dance entitled ‘Evil Queens'.

A fantastic dance achievement for these students. Well done, girls.

Dance Festival - A Student Perspective

From 14th to 16th of August, around 90 students from Oxley High participated in the New England Regional Dance Festival. Many schools from across the region travelled to Tamworth to dance and watch their students perform and have fun on the stage of the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC).

Oxley's participation this year included nine dances, with one dance from each of the four elective dance classes and five other dances performed by students who had chosen dance for Thursday sport. All of the dancers had been practising since the start of Term 1 to get ready for their big performances and to make sure everything was well rehearsed. On top of these nine dances, three of the Oxley High School HSC dance routines were part of the 2014 festival line up.

Jayme Lay was one of the student choreographers for dance and choreographed the jazz routine ‘Beautiful Nightmare'. According to Jayme, the inspiration for her dance came about because she is a big fan of both Beyoncé and upbeat jazz. Jayme said that, "… choreographing a dance is hard work and takes a lot of time and effort."

One of the positive aspects of Dance Festival is that it is open to all students to participate. Neither Year 8 student Ashleigh Hodgson nor Tear 10 student Kaitlyn Robards do dance as an elective or out of school but instead choose to do it for sport. Ashleigh was in the dance ‘Pom Poms' which was choreographed by students Shannon Vanderstelt and Tammy Robinson. Ashleigh reflected on one of the other important aspects and said that her favourite part of Dance Festival was talking with everyone during the night and watching all the other dances. Kaitlyn's favourite part of Dance Festival was actually performing and she was in the dance ‘Wasting My Young Years' which was choreographed by Layla and Olivia Harris.

All of the students performed very well and should be proud of their effort and achievement. Mrs Massey did an extraordinary job of coordinating and organising everyone at school attending this year's Dance Festival and thanks also to Ms Hodgson for teaching all of the elective dance classes.

Oxley Boys Hockey Team Gallant In Defeat

Oxley High School has had tremendous success with their hockey sides over the years and this year has proven to be no exception.

The Open Boys Hockey CHS Knockout Team travelled to Grafton to take on Grafton High School on the 19th of August. Down to the final 16 in the state, each team desperately wanted the win to make it into the top 8 and then proceed to the quarter finals.

Unfortunately, on this occasion, Oxley was defeated 8-4 by the talented Grafton squad. However, according to Mr Yeo, "Our boy's didn't drop their heads". Instead, they continued to play their best for the whole game, displaying fantastic sportsmanship on the field. All of the team members performed to the extent of their ability and did themselves and Oxley proud for making it as far as they did.

The squad consisted of: William Haywood, Matthew Everett, Andrew Finch, Jonathan Stacey, Lachlan Harris, Darcy Carr, Brendan Kelly, John Moore, Blake Abra, Toby Fox, Blake Turner, Mitchell Lewin and Harry Lewin. Blake Turner of Year 12 scored the final goal of the match in his last game for Oxley.

Congratulations to the boys leaving the side, who won the last two state titles. Special thanks to Mr Haworth for driving the bus and Mr Yeo for coaching this year's Open Boys Hockey team.

Student's Painting To Hang In Parliament House

FROM the corridors of school in Tamworth to the corridors of power in Sydney, Grace Bowden is an artist going places.

Her painting of Moonbi's moody mountains is bound for Parliament House, where it will hang for all to see in the main hall.

The piece was last week announced as one of just three student works from across the state selected for a new exhibition.

Accompanying the honour is a cheque for $500 and a further $1000 to Oxley High School, where she is completing her Year 9 studies.

The budding artist said she was "pretty excited" to learn her work would hang beside those of major prize finalists in the NSW Parliament Plein Air Prize exhibition.

Composed during a Telstra-sponsored workshop earlier this year, the painting caught the eye of New England artist Peter Champion.

"He sort of liked it, so I just entered it," said the 14-year-old, who hopes to travel to Sydney in the holidays to see it hanging.

The talents of fellow Tamworth artist Greg Mullar will also be on display, after his main prize entry, In Different Light Mount Soma, was highly commended.

"I painted each of the 10 paintings at different times of the day," he said.

"The light changes quickly, so you have to get it done quickly.

"This is an awesome feeling and I will continue to paint and hopefully win next year."

Oxley High Open Boys Soccer V John Edmunson High School

Disco Lives!

Pounding beats, outlandish costumes, flashing lights…these things sound as though they belong at Rio de Janeiro's Carnivale, but on Wednesday 26 February this year you could find all three in Oxley High School's auditorium.

The school has a proud history of three discos a year, two organised by the SRC and one by the Sports Council. The three-hour-long parties are very popular, and always have an outlandish theme – Fairytales, Disney Characters, Horror and Sports Heroes being just some of them.

The most recent, though, may have possibly been the strangest of all. Sporting the proud title ‘Gender Bender', the night abounded with cross-dressers, from eighteen-year-old boys in miniskirts and high heels, to Year Seven girls in footy shirts and fake moustaches. It was an interesting night, to say the least!

Perhaps unfortunately for them, the first disco of the year is always the Year Seven Welcome Disco, and dozens of bright-eyed new students turned up, unsure of what to expect, only to get quite a shock when they saw Andrew Finch, our School Captain, in a woman's one-piece swimsuit! Some decided not to dress up, but most got into the swing of things, and wigs, moustaches, garish make-up and flat caps were everywhere.

All in all, the disco lived up to previous standards and the night proved to be a very enjoyable and entertaining one.

Food Of All Flavours

One of the most influential events of the Oxley High School community is International night.

Last year was a great success for the school with many students and members of the community all turning up in exotic dress from multiple countries.

So what exactly is International Night?

International Night is a celebration at Oxley High School and is being held this year on the 14^thof March. Starting at approximately 6pm and finishing at 10pm, it is all about multiculturalism and embracing not only just new tastes and flavours from the different stalls from certain countries such as Ireland, Turkey, Mexico and Japan but also the inclusion of everybody in not only the school community but the outside community as well.

Singers and musicians from Oxley High School provide entertainment throughout the night with catchy songs and music everybody in the family will love. Awards are handed out for the best dressed and the best stall, along with the no age restriction, this makes for a deliciously tasty, excitable night for all the family.

For all the bubbly citizens out there, you can even get up and dance along to the tunes. If you really want to embarrass your children, friends or parents, this is an opportunity you won't want to pass up!

So if you want to try a new flavour or a different meal, simply do not feel like cooking or would like an enjoyable night out without emptying your pockets, then come along on Friday the 14^thof March at Oxley High. It is a wonderful night with a great atmosphere and live entertainment, what more could you ask for?

Oxley High Introduces Targeted Sports Programs

In an exciting development for sports-mad students, Oxley High is introducing a Targeted Sports Program in 2014. Students participating in the program will undertake specialised development programs in their chosen sport, during school time, as a school subject.

In announcing the Targeted Sports Program, the High Performance Co-ordinator, Mr Peter Yeo, said that Touch Footballwill be targeted in 2014, with the plan to include more sports in 2015, with soccer, hockey and cricket being considered.

The program will be integrated with a full academic curriculum which accommodates for the special needs of the talented sports athlete. The Targeted Sports Program will be available to students in years 7, 8, 9 and 10 in 2014 and will run for 3 terms, starting in Term 2.

Mr Yeo says that the program is being introduced for several reasons, including:

· Enable students to develop their skills with a view to enhancing their prospects of selection in local, regional, state and national teams

· Chance to increase students' exposure to their preferred sport, in the timetable, during the school day.

· Opportunity for students to select a subject that they are directly interested in, within a practical environment

· Provide an opportunity for the school to continue to compete successfully in both boys and girls State Knockout Teams

Placement in the program is dependent upon:

· An ability, interest and potential in the nominated sport

· A recognisable commitment to school studies and academic performance

· An excellent record of school conduct and attendance

Giyanha Dirrabuu Murri Awards

The annual Giyanha Dirrabuu Murri Awards, were presented at the Capitol Theatre in Tamworth on Friday October 11.

Giyanha Dirrabuu Murri is a Gamilaraay word meaning ‘future outstanding Aboriginal'. Oxley High student Tanika Mclean, who is in Year 10, was recognized for her outstanding efforts and was awarded the Senior Leadership Excellence Award. The award for "Community and School Partnership" went to Oxley High School for their Clontarf Program, headed up by Joseph Craigie and Michael Watton.

Oxley Triumphs Again At State Hockey Titles

For the second year in a row, the Oxley High School Boys Hockey team have won the CHS knockout at Narellan, defeating Moss Vale 5-3 in the final. "Winning any state school knockout is a tremendous achievement," said Principal Simon Bartlett-Taylor, "but it takes a great deal of dedication, talent and luck to win two years running." The boys, coached by parent Chas McKenzie and managed by dedicated teacher Bob Ash, can feel very proud of their achievements, as are Oxley High and its community. A full report of Oxley's success has been compiled by Mr Ash:

The Oxley boys state knockout team travelled to Narellan in Sydney during Week 9 to defend their title of state champions in the final 8 playoff series. Each team played 3 games over 2 days, with Oxley's first opponent being Dubbo. Oxley were straight onto the attack and worked a penalty corner after 5 minutes, with Andrew Finch scoring with a straight hit, and he was again in the action in the 17^thminute when he passed to Harry Lewin in the goalmouth to give Oxley a 2-0 lead which was the half time score. After only 2 minutes in the second half Lachlan Harris scored and Dubbo replied with 5 minutes to go in the game after a lack of communication among our defenders. Sam Liles played on quickly with 3 minutes on the clock, and Harry Lewin scored after Sam's shot was partially blocked. Andrew Finch hammered home a straight hit to put the final nail in Dubbo's coffin, who couldn't claw their way back into the match with the final score 5-1.

In their second game Oxley played Taree High and we were immediately on the defensive with Will Haywood saving a shot and Sam Liles deflecting another shot in the first 5 minutes. Taree drew first blood 5 minutes later after a defensive lapse led to a 1 on 1 with our keeper. Taree led 1-0 at half time. Coach Chas McKenzie impressed on our boys in the half time huddle to play a more disciplined game and pass earlier and Sam Liles evened the game after 5 minutes with a nice drag on the goalie and flicked into the net. Australian rep Sam Liles scored again 5 minutes later to give Oxley a 2-1 lead with a well-executed drag flick. Forwards Harry Lewin and Reid Gould were putting great pressure on the Taree defence, while Sam Liles was the focus of some heavy marking especially in our attacking 25. Final score was 2-1 to Oxley.

In the final against Moss Vale High, the boys had a penalty corner after 7 minutes and their keeper palmed the shot down, but Reid Gould was hungry and picked up the scraps to put Oxley on the board. Three minutes later, Lachlan Harris scored with a direct shot to give us a two goal buffer. Our joy was short lived when Moss Vale scored in the 15^thminute, however, Reid Gould scored in the 23^rdminute for a 3-1 lead. Keeper Will Haywood had his work cut out for him, saving many shots, but Moss Vale were able to get back into the game and drew level in the 29^thminute. Harry Lewin and Blake Turner realised there was a lot at stake and kept peppering the goal with no result until Joey put a halt to that and scored in the 47^thminute when Reid hit across the face of goal after eliminating 2 or 3 defenders. Score 4-3. Andrew Finch made Moss Vale flinch with 10 to go and the score stayed 5-3 in Oxley's favour. State champs again!

The boys would like to thank Chas McKenzie for his coaching expertise; the Sports Council and Mr Yeo for organising the socks and the new playing strip and sponsorship covering turf fees and levies, and also the P&C for making the bus and trailer available. Best of luck to the 7 players leaving us this year for their HSC, and special mention to Andrew Cross and Dean Robinson who didn't get to travel with the team for the finals but who contributed to our success during the year. Thanks also to the parents and supporters who assisted with lunches, slices, shopping, and especially Dave Turner for his assistance booking the motel.

Student Selected in Sydney Orchestra

Angus Young recently performed in the highly prestigious NSW School's Spectacular Symphony Orchestra.

Angus has just completed Year 12 and was one of only two non-metropolitan students to to be selected to participate. He was the only bass clarinetist performing in the orchestra.

According to Angus, he owed his selection to the wonderful support he has had from Mrs Di Hall, the New England Regional Arts Coordinator as well as the NSW Department of Education and Communities Arts Unit, in particular, Mr Steve Williams and Mr Scott Ryan.

Angus said that he could not have achieved this level of success alone and he was very grateful for the help and encouragement he has had from his parents, Carmel Spencer, Ann Hoy, John Muller, Elisabeth Kelvin and John Plankenhorn.

Following succesful concert performances with the orchestra in November, Angus' long term plans are to attend the Australian Film, Television and Radio School in Sydney for a career in film production.

Oxley Play In State Baseball Final

For the first time in 18 years, Oxley High made it through to the final of the Proud Shield State CHS Boys' Baseball Knockout.

To get there, firstly the team played central coast team Narara Valley High School in Tamworth and defeated them 18-5. This win put the side through to the final eight, which saw the boys travel to Sydney to play East Hills Boys High School. With Oxley scoring 11 runs in their first innings, the opposition found it difficult to catch up and Oxley ended up winning the game 17-4.

The final four contest was another home game for Oxley, against Woolaware High School. After some good pitching from Toby Bowen, the opposition were restricted to only one run after four innings. The Woolaware pitcher was also difficult to get away but Oxley managed to score two runs to lead 2-1. Some strong batting in the fifth innings saw Oxley score 3 quick runs early on. This resulted in a change of pitchers and Oxley took full advantage to score another 7 runs to finish the innings leading 12-1. Woolaware were unable to score in their next innings so the Mercy Rule was applied and Oxley was declared the winners, which qualified them for the final.

The final was played on Wednesday 19th September at the International Sports Park in Blacktown against Westfields Sports High, from Fairfield West in Sydney. Despite Oxley travelling down and training the day before, Westfields proved too strong, taking out the final by fifteen runs. However, being State runners-up was still a great achievement and, with only one player departing this year, prospects are good for another successful tilt at the title next year.

Oxley High would like to acknowledge all of the hard work put in by Mr Robert Chandler as Coach and Mr Jake Forsythe as Assistant Coach. Their efforts were greatly appreciated by the school and the boys in the team.

Oxley Student To Represent Australia in Malaysia

12 November 2012 - Sam Liles is presenty in Malaysia following his selection in the Australian U21 team to compete in the Sultan Johor Cup, which will include teams from New Zealand, Pakistan, Germany and India.

Sam is hoping to play well in the tournament to impress the selectors and gain a spot in the Australian team to play in the Junior World Cup in India in December 2013.

Sam has had a very busy and successful year to date. He was captain of the undefeated Oxley High team that recently won the CHS State Knockout, as well as being part of the Services Workies team that won the Tamworth A-Grade Men's premiership. He is also a member of the NSWIS Emerging Talent Squad, which trains throughout the year at the Sydney Olympic Park High Performance Hockey Training Centre and the NSWIS Facility. He also played in the NSW Under 18's State Championship-winning side.

On Saturday night, he received further accolades, when he was named the Northern Inland Acadamy of Sport (NIAS) Male Athlete of the Year.

Oxley Basketballers Play In CHS Knockout

The Oxley High Under 15 boys' basketball team earned a place in the State CHS Knockout Finals with a victory over Canobolas High in the Inter-Regional Final on 29th October.

Despite having to travel to Orange to play on Canobolas' home turf, the Oxley boys started strongly and lead 21 to 8 after the first quarter. They continued to play strongly throughout the game and finished on top 70-45.

The side then travelled to Terrigal for the knockout finals, which were held on the 8th and 9th of November. They were placed in a tough pool, which included two selective high schools, Sydney Boys High and Hunter Sports High. Against formidable opposition, the Oxley team performed creditably but were defeated 65-44 by Sydney and 61-25 by Hunter. The strength and depth of these two teams was evidenced by the fact that both teams ultimately met in the playoff for first and second.

Undeterred, the Oxley boys lifted themselves for their third pool game against Kiera High School and played strongly to record a tight 66-65 win. This placed them third in their pool, which meant they would play Sydney Technology High to determine 5th and 6th position. Another very close game saw the Oxley team show their class in attack and defence, winning 50-47.

Well done to all of the players for their dedication and "never-say-die" attitude. They can take great pride in their performances to finish 5th overall in the state. A big thankyou must go to Paul Hobson and Peter McDonald for all their hard work in training and coaching the side.

Oxley High State Hockey Champions!

13/09/12 - Oxley High have completed an undefeated season with a comprehensive 5-2 win against Bathurst High in the State CHS Boys' Hockey Knockout final in Newcastle.

In a brilliant start to the game, Oxley led 3-0 after only 12 minutes with goals to Blake Turner, Reid Gould and Joey Holt and totally dominated the first half with controlled ball movement. They scored again early in the second half from a corner through Sam Liles, with Bathurst getting on the scoresheet for the first time soon after. Lachlan Willis then highlighted Oxley's dominance by banging in a quick reply. Bathurst scored late to make the final score 5-2 in Oxley's favour.

Oxley had earned their place in the final with commanding performances the previous day, defeating Grafton 6-3 in the morning and Lithgow 5-3 in the afternoon.

Well done to the whole team who all performed brilliantly under the expert coaching of Richard Willis. Richard was also in charge when Oxley last won the boys' knockout in 2006 and the school would like to thank him for all his efforts over the years. With only three players, Harry Moore, Luke Fox and Lachlan Willis, leaving this year, we look forward to another successful season next year.

Cycling Sisters Continue To Sizzle

21 October 2012 - Jess and Tori Saunders have just returned from New Zealand after competing in the Yunca Junior Tour of the Southland.

Tori won the Under 15's women's tour, taking the Yellow Jersey and the King Of The Mountains Jersey. Jess came home with the Green Sprint Ace Jersey. They also competed in a two-day track carnival in Invercargill, where they won all of the events between them.

The girls arrived back in Sydney to compete in the National Junior Track series at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney, where Jess won 8 out of 9 events putting her firmly in the lead of the U15's series. Tori has moved up to the Under 17's division. Round two of the series will be held in Perth on 3rd and 4th of November.

Jess also raced in the NSW Country Championship at Coffs Harbour last weekend, winning the Under 15 girls' title.

Oxley High Sisters Cycle To Success

Sep 2012 - Tori and Jess Saunders from Oxley High recently competed at the Cycling Australia Under 15 Road National Championships in Canberra, with both sisters finishing among the medals.

14 year old Tori won the 8km time trial to become the national 15 Years champion, while Jess, who is 13 years old, finished a creditable 16th.

In the 25 km Road Race, Tori earned a Bronze medal for third place, with Jess again placing 16th.

Jess then got in on the medals act by finishing 3rd and receiving a bronze medal in the Criterium final.

The girls head to New Zealand shortly for more racing before competing in the national junior track series.

08/09/12. The Oxley High athletics team enjoyed great success at the recent State carnival held at the Homebush Athletics Centre. Outstanding results were achieved by:

Jessica Aldridge - 2 gold medals in the 15 years Shot Put and Javelin, as well as a silver medal in the Discus.

Lia Mills - Gold medal in the 14 years 400 metres, as well as placing 5thin the 800 metres final.

Wade Hazell – Bronze medal in the 17 years 400 metres and 5thplace in the final of the 200 metres.

John Moore - Bronze medal for finishing 3rdin the 14 years 100 metre hurdles.

Georgia Pryor, Rebecca Short, Paris Knox & Havannah Ellsley – Bronze medal in the 13 years Girls' 4 x 100 metre relay. Georgia also finshed 6thin the 13 years 200 metres final.

Mr Bryan felt that this was one of Oxley's most successful state carnivals for some time and he would like to commend all of the Oxley High students who participated for their great efforts over the three days.

Oxley Students Play At The Opera House

Oxley High can be very proud of three of its students who were chosen to play with the NSW State Wind Band.

Angus Young, Toby Harradine and Leah Griffiths recently had the opportunity to perform at the Sydney Opera House.

Angus, in Year 12, played bass clarinet, while Toby, in Year 10, played bassoon with the Senior Ensemble and performed in two concerts on 27th and 28th August .

Leah, who is in Year 7, played trumpet in two concerts on 29th and 30th of August with the Junior Ensemble.

From all reports, the three performed splendidly and did themselves, their families and their school proud.

Ministers visit Oxley High

On tuesday 20 March the Ministers for Education, Aboriginal Affairs and Sport and Recreation visited our school.

The Minister for Education officially opened the Clontarf Academy that has been established at the school.

Oxley Fire: On sunday morning 18 March at 4.00am a fire destroyed the top floor of Castlereagh Block

The fire has caused major damage to the school. The English, PDHPE and Careers faculties along with the Counsellor's office have been totally destroyed resulting in these teachers losing most if not all their teaching resources. Five classrooms, two science labs and the English bookroom have been totally destroyed. Damage has also been caused to the Deputies offices, Administration offices and the Library.

The school thanks the great many people who have offered support over the past days.

Centre For Excellence

On 30 September 2009 the NSW Minister for Education and Training announced Oxley High School as a Centre For Excellence. The school was selected in recognition of consistently achieving strong results and will form the "hub" for a cluster of schools. It will link with the University of New England to allow the next generation of teachers to observe high quality teaching and provide continuing professional development for established teachers.
